How To Replace a 240 Volt Circuit Breaker

Now that you have got the wire inside the panel box. It is time to install the breaker. In this video we will show you how to install a 240 volt circuit breaker. If you get to this stage of your electrical project you are almost done! Most people think this is the hardest part of installing an electrical circuit. But the truth is, it is actually the easiest. As long as you have watched my ” installing a wire into a breaker box” video then you will have no worries about accidentally getting zapped.

Be safe, and turn off the main breaker if you want to be extra careful. 240 volt circuits are usually your appliance circuits. Hot water heater, ACU, Oven, Dryer, and stovetop. If you are installing an appliance such as a dryer that has a light in it, then you will be working with three wire. Meaning you have, two hots, a neutral, and a ground. That neutral wire is because you have a 120 volt load in there, like the light. If you are just hooking up a motor, such as your AC unit, then you will only have 2 wire. A black wire, a white wire, and a ground wire. You will hook the ground wire up to the ground bar of the electrical panel. Then you will phase the white wire black to identify to other electricians that you will be using this as a hot wire. The black wire and the phased white wire will go on the 240 volt breaker.

Make sure that the breaker you buy is compatible with your panel type. Your electrical panel will have a label on the inside of the panel cover. This should tell you which type of breakers are compatible with your panel.
