How to Install Recessed Lighting

Pot lights, can lights, recessed lighting. These terms are all referring to the same thing. It may be called different names depending on the region you are in. I typically just choose to call them can lights. They make two types of can lights. Remodel can lights and new construction can lights.

If you already own a home and you are looking to install more lighting then you will probably being using remodel can lights. Remodel can lights give you the ability to install can lights without tearing out the ceiling drywall. The only time you may have to cut the ceiling is if there is no attic access above you or you are installing multiple can lights that are not in the same truss cavity.

Even then, if you are feeling brave or have one of those tools that helps you see through walls, you can use a looooong drill bit and drill through multiple trusses to get the wire to your desired location without cutting drywall. Because i don’t have the tool that sees through walls, I train all my people to just cut a small chase in drywall from can to can so you can make sure you are not going to drill through plumbing pipes or wires. There is just too much liability to do it blindly.
