How to Install a Switch Loop

Switch loops used to be a common wiring practice a few years ago. Most electricians have gone away from this. A lot of people are making their houses smart houses these days and you are not able to install smart devices in homes that have switch loops, because you need a neutral wire to install smart devices. In a switch loop the neutral wire is actually up in the fixture box, not the switchbox.

If you open your switchbox up and all you see is a white and black wire connected to your switch, then you are looking at a switch loop. The virtual electrician tells you how to properly wire a fixture to a switch loop if you are trying to replace your current electrical fixture.
