Electrical Wire Color Code

There are many different types of electrical wire. There are also different colors of electrical wire. If you want to start doing a little electrical work around the house, you have to start with the basics. What do the different colors of wire mean? Lets start with the ground wire. This will either be green or bare copper. This wire is used for a safe electrical system. Its there to help protect you from electrical shock. It gives the electricity a path to ground if there is ever a fault in your electrical system.

The next wire you might notice is the black wire. This wire is sometimes call the hot wire. It carries the electrical current away from the panel. The white wire is the neutral wire. It carries the electrical current back to the panel. In an alternating current electrical system, you need both the black and white wire to complete the circuit.

If there is ever a break in the loop, the current will not work. Be sure to watch our other videos on the basics of electricity to help you get started. Please like our videos and subscribe to our page!
