WHERE TO START

How to Wire in a Dryer Outlet

Install your dryer circuit. You will need:

  • 10/3 wire
  • 2 pole 30 amp breaker
  • 2 gang nail on or remodel box
  • 30 amp receptacle
  • cover plate

You must run the 10/3 wire from the panel to dryer location. Then you can install the 2 gang box and hook up the dryer receptacle. The dryer receptacle will be marked; ground, neutral, x, and z. The bare copper wire goes under the ground screw. The white wire is your neutral wire, this will go under the marked neutral screw.

Then you will need to hook up the red and black wires to the x and z screws. It doesn’t matter which one goes on x and z. This is just phase A and B. Each leg is supplying 120 volts for your 240 volt circuit.
